Often, you will find in older homes that three-prong outlets and GFCI are not present, as they did not exist when the homes were built. Two-prong outlets are not considered a hazard if they are functioning properly but can be a potential fire hazard if in need of replacement.

Another item that is examined closely during inspections is the type of wiring and connections found throughout the house. Homes built before 1960 are at risk of having cloth-covered wiring throughout the house. This is not an issue if the cloth wires have been disconnected and no longer carry a current, but if they are live, they are considered a high fire risk; particularly if they are located near insulation. In homes built in the 1970s, inspections will also notify you if you have aluminum terminations throughout your home. For a short period in the 1970s, aluminum terminations were used on wiring for fixtures throughout the house. Unfortunately, most modern fixtures are not rated for aluminum. If the homeowner is not aware of this and replaces the original fixtures with modern ones — for instance installing a new chandelier over the dining room table with Cheyenne lighting — can cause arcing between the terminals, resulting in a fire.
